The congregation of Shepherd of the Hills voted unanimously, on September 13, to become the Charter Organization for the only Boy Scout Venture program located in Garrett County. The congregation also empowered Pastor Rick Egtvedt to work with the Boy Scouts of America and the greater county community to recruit and lead/advise this new Venture Crew. Shepherd of the Hills will host an Open House on Thursday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. for new or potential members of the Venturing crew as well as for adult volunteers. This will be a time to learn all about the program. Shepherd of the Hills is located in Sand Flat Plaza on Rte 219 and Sand Flat Road, near Deep Creek Lake. For further information, contact Pastor Rick at 301-501-8218 or go to the church website at www.shepherdofthehillslutheran.org
Venturing is a co-ed, youth led program for young adults age 14 (with completed 8th grade age 13) through 20 which focuses on adventure, leadership, personal development and service. Venture Scouting gives young adults challenging, exciting (monthly) adventures like cycling tours, whitewater rafting, climbing and rappelling, zip lining, snowboarding, scuba diving, gaming and golfing, as well as service projects and community service.
As the only program of its kind located in Garrett County, this Crew will offer opportunities and experiences for all adventurous area youth. Existing Scouts (such as those chartered with Troops 1 and 22 in Oakland and Troop 460 in Grantsville) will be able to register with this Crew without having to pay a separate annual registration fee. Venture Scouting is naturally open to JROTC High School program participants and Garrett College students, as well as any person within the age range and who has a love for the outdoors.
