Installation of The Reverend Donald R. Thomas

Deep Creek Lake- Members of the community and clergy from the West Virginia- Western Maryland (WV-WMD) Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) gathered on Sunday, November 11, 2007 to celebrate the Installation and Commissioning of The Reverend Donald R. Thomas. The service was held at Will O' the Wisp at Deep Creek Lake. Mr. Robert E. Thomas, Esquire, brother of Pastor Thomas and former Lutheran pastor, preached at the service. The Most Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Dunkin, Bishop of the West Virginia Western Maryland Synod, also led the worship service of Holy Communion and the Order for Installation.

Shepherd of the Hills is the first "mission congregation under development" of the WV-WMD Synod since the merger of the ELCA in 1987. It holds its regular weekly services at the Garrett 8 Cinemas at 9:30 AM Sundays. Newcomers, tourists and visitors are always welcome. Thanksgiving Community Worship Service

People from across the community are invited to join together for an ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve-Eve worship service, scheduled for Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m., in the Sitzmark Room of Will O' the Wisp, on Rte. 219 at Deep Creek Lake.

The Reverend Donald R. Thomas, pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, will lead the service of Praise and Thanksgiving, which will include favorite Thanksgiving hymns and songs, Thanksgiving litanies, prayers, message and special music. The service is free and open to the public.

Will O' the Wisp is located at 20160 Garrett Highway on US 219 ½ mile north of the traffic light at Glendale Road. The Sitzmark Room is located on the lower level. Handicap entrance access is by car at the rear of the building; enter at the patio doors.

Shepherd of the Hills holds its regular weekly services at the Garrett 8 Cinemas at 9:30 AM Sundays. Refreshments and sermon discussion follow the worship service. Installation and Commissioning of The Rev. Donald R. Thomas

The congregation of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church is pleased to invite the community to the Installation and Commissioning of The Reverend Donald R. Thomas on Sunday, November 11, 2007, at 4:00 p.m. in the Sitzmark Room of Will O' the Wisp.

Mr. Robert E. Thomas, Esquire, brother of Pastor Thomas and former Lutheran pastor, will be the preacher at the service. The Most Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Dunkin, Bishop of the West Virginia Western Maryland Synod, will also lead the worship service of Holy Communion and the Order for Installation.

Shepherd of the Hills to Host Picnic for Habitat Workers

Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church will join forces with Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty to host a picnic for Habitat for Humanity Workers on Tuesday, July 17. The picnic will be held in the Lion's pavillion at the Garrett County Fair Grounds, and will begin at 6:00 PM. The Habitat workers come from Rockville United Church of Christ and Bethesda United Church of Christ.

Coldwell Banker will supply 2 grills, hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks. Members of Shepherd of the Hills will sign-up for paper products, salads, baked beans, condiment trays, desserts and cash donations.

Evening Under The Stars (with Shepherd of the Hills)

Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church is sponsoring an “Evening under the Stars” on Friday, August 3, at 8:00 p.m. The event will be held (rain or no rain) at the Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park. The evening is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served. Guest speaker and Interim Pastor of Shepherd of the Hills, Rev. Donald R. Thomas, will share a biblical background of the stars, moon and planets, as well as our stewardship responsibility as it pertains to God's creation. Gus Johnson, local astronomer, naturalist, and employee of the State Park, will present a slide show of the heavenly bodies as well as discuss such things as light and satellite pollution, types of telescopes, what to look for when purchasing one, still-camera photography and explain what we'll be seeing in the evening sky. The group will then proceed outside to view the stars, planets and moon through binoculars and telescopes. (Please feel free to bring your own binoculars.) In case of inclement weather, the viewing portion of the evening will be postponed until Friday, August 10.
